James Wilson
James is a photographer and fine artist. Currently based in Perth, WA, he has most recently exhibited in the UK with the Darkness to Light collection (Edinburgh Festival 2019, followed by Cambridge Makers Gallery). His earliest exhibition was at 15 at High School.
As well as leading the beginners sessions in Perth, previous other roles have included a stint in the Royal Air Force, stage technician, percussion technician, volunteering in Bolivia and a recently completed degree. He’s constantly looking for opportunities to further his practice and develop new ideas.

He is extensively traveled, speaks reasonable German and will massacre French given the opportunity.
Notable life moments include meeting Oscar the Grouch on the set of Sesame Street, Having Deborah Harry ask who was playing sax in the bedroom (It wasn’t, it was bagpipes), then being alone in a cage with a frisky 7m anaconda and getting REALLY close to an Andean Condor.

Street Photography Meetup - Perth Cultural Centre - 3pm - 2 hours
Street photography is fun for some and challenging for others. Personally I see it as something which is socially important as our shots of Perth one day in April become a historical record in the future of life in 2021.
I have chosen the afternoon so we can explore adding shadows as way of composing the image which can make for a strong emotive shot.

Architectural Photography Meetup - Perth Town Hall - 1.30pm - 2 hours
Architecture can be a challenge to a photographer. Unless you have some very expensive lens, buildings can look distorted. We will be looking at ways to compose our images to work with this and around this problem. Perth has lots of glass buildings which give us some awesome reflections of the City. A standard, wide angle or prime lens is best for architecture. Don't forget to bring a fully charged battery and a spare if you have one and make sure you have plenty of memory card space. A polarising filter might be handy if you have one. A tripod is not necessary.

Whilst learning the technical side of using your camera is important learning how to compose your shot is equally and for some harder to learn. There are many 'tricks of the trade' used to improve your photograph and we will start with the rule of thirds today and move on to some others during the course of the session.

Learning to see a shot is not something that comes naturally to every photographer so themes like this are useful to start hunting out a shot with a difference. This location has many reflective surfaces from a water park to glass buildings and lots of chrome, plenty of potential for winning shots.
