Exploring Composition - Using Leading Lines - Yagan Square - 2pm - 2 hours
We will explore various methods to use different compositional 'tricks of the trade' over some of the upcoming sessions. The first method we will look at is using Leading Lines in Photography which is a simple but great way to immediately see an improvement in the shots you take. Leading lines help add depth and guide to viewer of your shot to the main subject within your shot.

We have a different photo theme each fortnight and the two hour sessions take place in different outdoor locations across Perth. Great opportunity to try something new with the guidance of a professional photographer, and come away with some new shots for your portfolio or album.

Complete beginner? We recommend starting with the Photography for Beginners Class, which is a 3 hour structured workshop where you’ll learn the basics of using your camera with more 1-on-1 time with the instructor.

Looking to learn more? Come along to the group sessions, which are more casual and informal than other workshops, and with more time to take photos and put your new skills into practice.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

What’s involved? Each session starts with an introduction to the fortnight’s theme, and the photography instructor will chat about the camera settings and techniques to use. You’ll then have time to take lots of photos, with the instructor present to answer any questions. You’ll receive feedback and have a chance to chat with everyone to share tips and ideas. We’re a social bunch!

Join the Perth Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session and to take part in our free, fortnightly competitions!

We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you're sick.
Keep 1.5 metres away from others.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others. Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses.
Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitiser.
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Use a flexed elbow or a tissue; if you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and appropriately.

Exploring Composition - Filling the frame and framing your shot - John Oldham Park, Perth - 10am - 2 hours
We will explore various methods to use different compositional 'tricks of the trade' today we are looking at how to fill the frame and how to use your environment to frame your shot. Filling the frame is generally when your shot is dominated by one subject matter, say a rose and nothing much else, it can be a very powerful way to present your subject. This can be used in portraiture where you only have part of the face or just the head. Framing the shot involves looking for a way to add a frame for your subject for example, taking a shot of Cityscape from under the canopy of a tree, the tree gives a frame to the shot. These are simple methods which can turn an average shot into a winning shot.
